Juniors Lily Janda and Aysia Brenner prepare for the written round at the Knowledge Bowl competition at Anacortes High School on January 12th.

Arlington’s leading Knowledge Bowl team finished in 1st place among 3A teams at Tuesday’s match at Anacortes High School, coming in at 2nd among all teams.

“The Wikipedia Appreciation Society” saw team members (senior Hannah Martian, and juniors Aysia Brenner, Lily Janda, and Ben Rosenthal) correctly answer questions in a myriad of different categories. Janda was able to answer difficult math and science questions, while Brenner answered questions in both science and history.  Martian answered questions in law and sports, and Rosenthal correctly answered several history questions.

The “A” team scored a season-high 79 points, including a season high 21 in a single round. 44 teams competed at the match, with LaConner’s “Somewhat Clean” coming in ahead of Arlington. “The Wikipedia Appreciation Society” is ranked first in the 3A division, with Glacier Peak’s two teams

“I read a lot of books,” said Janda, when asked how she prepares for competitions. “Mostly nonfiction books about things I’m interested in; such as science and Canadian bowling.

“The Average IQ’s” which includes senior Lily Bynum and Jacob Dietz, and juniors Nick Mendro, Sean McCauley and Edward Radion, placed in an impressive 15th spot, coming in at 6th among 3A teams. All of the members answered the questions, with Mendro focusing on grammar and math, and Bynum on science.

Both teams qualify for the playoffs, which will take place next month at South Whidbey High School. There, the top three schools in the 3A division will advance to State.
