Ben Rosenthal (’17), member of The Wikipedia Appreciation Society, discusses strategy with teammates Lily Janda (’17) and Aysia Brenner (’17) prior to the first oral round.

At the second Knowledge Bowl tournament of the year, the AHS Knowledge Bowl teams attempted to stretch two teams into three, which yielded mixed results at Jackson High School on December 8th.

With a lower number of participants than most years (only nine members) the teams tried to go with a 3-3-3 strategy; three members per team. Usually, all teams will have four members competing at a time, which result in only two teams, with an additional member available as a substitute.

Arlington’s “A”  team, the Wikipedia Appreciation Society was comprised of Ben Rosenthal, Lily Janda, and Aysia Brenner for the meet. The team finished in 8th overall, with 76 points. Kamiak, LaConner, and Lynden finished in the top three, respectively. At the match last month, the team scored 73 points.

“I heard it’s where all the nerds go to hang out,” said Rosenthal in regards to why he joined Knowledge Bowl.

Arlington’s “B” team, the Average IQs, touted seniors Hannah Martian and Lily Bynum, as well as junior Nicholas Mendro. The team placed 19th, with a score of 67. Last match, the team scored 63 points.

“Knowledge Bowl is a beacon of light and good hope…you get goosebumps,” said Mendro. He added that his favorite part of Knowledge Bowl is that he gets to, “spend a lot of time with my girlfriend, the bubbly, perky Lily Bynum.”

Arlington’s “C” team, What’s a Gym?, included members senior Jacob Dietz, and juniors Edward Radion and Sean McCauley. The team placed 28th, with a total of 61 points. The team did not compete at the last match.

With the top nine 3A teams moving on to districts in February, Arlington is well positioned to send two teams to the playoffs, with the “A” team currently in 2nd place among 3A teams, and the “B” team in 5th.

Arlington’s Knowledge Bowl team looks to continue their success next month at Anacortes High School.

*Those who interested in joining Knowledge Bowl are encouraged to see Herr Mendro ASAP, as spots are still available.
