Lady Eagles Stifled By Mavericks Defense In 1-0 Defeat

  Rough Night In Arlington

On a night of chills and spills at Arlington High School, the Lady Eagles(3-6-1) came up short in a defensive slug fest against the Meadowdale Mavericks(4-5-1). The Eagles were coming off of their desolation of Mountlake Terrace 11-0. They were vastly looking forward for a chance to continue their winning ways against a Meadowdale club that was only separated from Arlington in the standings by a lone League win.

   Game Summary

The game started in a very positive manner for the Eagles as senior Ali Krediet orchestrated  multiple runs down the right wing into the Maverick penalty box where her shots veered just wide of the net or into the keepers waiting hands. The first half wound down, the Eagles continued to beat down the right wing of the pitch gathering up possession time, but they could never quite find the back of the net. The first forty minutes progressed, a fatigued Arlington backline allowed a goal to sneak past the keeper giving the Mavs a pivotal 1-0 lead. That score held into the halftime break and the two teams went into the locker room preparing to come out strong in the final half of action.

Mist began to cover the now dark sky as the second half started in chilly sub-forty weather. The beginning of the period was marred by a defensive slugfest in the midfield that wouldn’t allow the breath of these hard fighting players to sneak through, much less a soccer ball. With 18 minutes remaining a heart-stopping solo run from Jordan Bartlow, a sophomore midfielder, was stopped just short by a persistent Meadowdale defender. The Eagles fight had been reignited in the final minutes as they crawled their way through the Meadowdale center backs looking for an equalizer. They had yet to find a real scoring opportunity, despite several spectacular combinations in the midfield, until Riley Christensen exploded down the pitch with breathtaking speed and fired a screamer at the Mav goalie who made a miraculous diving save to punch the shot wide. The Eagles final chance to draw level came off a free-kick in the closing seconds of the match. Hannah Hiester took the shot and fired the rock hard ball straight into the frozen arms of the keeper. As the refs whistle reverberated throughout the bleachers, the Arlington faithful knew there team had came up short.

  What To Look Forward To

Well this was a difficult night for the Eagles Varsity, it was not without its bright spots. Riley Christenson, the junior midfielder, particularly impressed by showing off her amazing pace and ability to create goal scoring opportunity’s. Whenever the ball touched her cleats something magical took place, and things can only get better as the Eagles continue to feed her the ball as the second half of the season winds down. Jordan Bartlow also impressed with her impeccable ball control and freak athleticism. This Eagles soccer club has amazing leadership from seniors Ali Krediet and Hannah Hiester, not to mention an incredibly deep team highlighted by a very talented sophomore class(i.e;Hailey Hiatt, Jersey Heiss, Ashlee Kluin, Ellie Rork, and Jordan Bartlow all made huge impacts in todays game.) As you can see, things can only get better for this young team.
