Wesco announced women’s flag football for the 2026-2027 season. Flag Football will happen during the winter season, outdoors on our turf field. Excitement flows through the school, with the anticipation of a new option for women’s sports.
Try-out’s are on June 9th and June 11th at 5:30 at Arlington High School. Wesco announced this sport last year with 4 schools participating, with their immense success Athletic Director Tom Roys thought it would be a good idea to open it up here.
“They were kind of our trial base. The three Everett schools and Monroe all offered it with great success. And so with them leading the way we wanted to follow suit and come in to offer that as a sport,” Roys said.
The one down side expressed from students and staff is the sport conflicting with the Girls Basketball season. With the pool of female athletes overlapping there is some fear of girls leaving or support lessening.
“I think it definitely could be difficult because it’s a hard decision for a lot of people to make if they want to play football or basketball. I think both are really fun and good opportunities. But I think it’ll affect basketball specifically because you’ll have a lot of people leaving to play flag football because they think it’ll be maybe more fun,” Kenna Langford (‘28), varsity basketball player said.
Inclusivity is the main goal at Arlington High School, especially when it comes to athletics. Flag Football will be a space where people come try-out and play whether or not they have any experience on the field before.
“I think that it’ll bring a lot more attention to the female athletes, and that it’ll be a good sport for everybody to come watch. I just think that it’s so new, and it’s an opportunity for so many girls that if they are not good at any other sport, it doesn’t matter because nobody on the team has played before,” Peyton Aanstad (‘27) said.
