Eagles routed by the Vikings 42-7

After a week 1 win to start off the season last week, the Eagles set their sights on the Lake Stevens Vikings, who have been a tough team to beat in recent years. The two teams battled it out last night at Lake Stevens High School with a raucous crowd on hand to support each others’ schools.

The team wasn’t alone when they took on the Vikings. Students and family members loaded the visiting stands to support their team. Even though it was an away game, the student section was full of loud and rowdy students. I asked senior Stephen Caponey about the differences between the student section at home and away games, and he said that the “home games are lit”, but “there’s no real difference” when it comes to the intensity of the students between home and away games.

The game started with a quick touchdown drive by the Vikings to make it 7-0, but the Eagles answered right back with a long catch-and-run touchdown by #30 Devon Nutter. However, the Vikings took control of the first half with two touchdown passes to wide-receiver #17 Anthony Hutchinson and a one to #37 Hunter Eckstrom. The Eagles were down 28-7 at half time. #53 David Botsford for the Eagles told me that the team needed to “focus” and “do our job” in order to dig themselves out of the halftime deficit. The Vikings scored again at the beginning of the third quarter to make it 35-7, but the Eagles kept fighting. On the next possession by the Vikings, linebacker #32 Wyatt Hawthorne intercepted the ball to give the Eagles hope for a comeback, but the Vikings were too strong.

The Vikings ended the third quarter with another touchdown by Hunter Eckstrom to make score 42-7. In the fourth quarter, the Vikings were able to stop the Eagles from scoring anymore points and the final score was the Vikings 42, and the Eagles 7. Though it was a tough loss, the boys didn’t seem phased by the loss, knowing that the season is young, and that there’s a lot of football left to be played. They look forward to redeem themselves in next weeks game against Marysville Getchell. #32 Wyatt Hawthorne says that “we need to go back to the drawing board” and “focus on Getchell next week.”
