Emma Janousek (’16) attempts to navigate through Shorecrest defenders on December 11th.

The AHS girls basketball team prevailed Friday night, beating Shorecrest with a final score of 53-45.

Senior Emma Janousek started off the night for the Eagles, scoring the first points of the game via the free throw line. After a lane violation was called on Shorecrest, Janousek made both of her free throws, putting Arlington up 2-0. Shorecrest was a bit out of sorts early in the first quarter, due to the Eagles’ backcourt press. Shorecrest soon adjusted, and took the lead, which they maintained until late in the second.

The game was dominated by Arlington’s three-game, as well as their aggressive defense, which led to a plethora of turnovers. Early in the game, the three ball just wasn’t falling for the Eagles, but that changed in the second half.

The Eagles went into the second quarter strong, with senior Sevi Bielser shooting a three-pointer just after the quarter started. And led by an impressive display by senior Jayla Russ–which included four points, two steals, and a foul in under a minute–the Eagles were up 27-18 at the half. Russ would go on to finish the game with 18 points.

The Eagles did not look back after that. More Eagles dominance ensued in the third, with senior Gracie Castaneda coming to life in the latter part of the game. Castaneda finished the game with 20 points.

When asked what the key to the game would be, Russ said that, “we just need to play our game.”

With the win, the Eagles improve their record to 5-0 on the season. They will face off against Glacier Peak this Monday, at home, at 7:15pm.
