February 14th isn’t complete without candy. From crinkling wrappers in backpacks to heart shaped boxes being passed between friends, Valentine’s Day has turned into a sugar filled tradition.
On Valentines Day, classrooms, homes, and stores quickly fill with heart shaped boxes, chocolate bars, and on theme colorful candy wrappers. While flowers and cards are also popular, candy has become one of the most common ways people show appreciation. Whether it comes from parents, friends, or someone special, candy is a familiar Valentine’s day tradition that many people enjoy each year. For many students, receiving candy on Valentine’s Day is nothing new.
“I normally receive candy from parents and my friends,” Tegan Morice (‘29) said.
The tradition of receiving candy on this holiday often starts young, with candy exchanges in elementary school that continues as people grow older. Because of this, candy has become strongly connected to the holiday itself. Beyond tradition, candy represents more than just something sweet. Many people believe it shows care and effort, even in simple form. Amelia shared that giving candy is
“Kind of a mix of tradition, love, and convenience,” Ameila Rapelyea (‘29) said.
She explained that it shows that at least you’re getting something that shows someone that they care; while also being easy to find anywhere and it’s yummy. This balance makes candy an easy yet meaningful way to participate in Valentine’s Day. When comparing candy to other gifts, many still prefer candy to roses. Most people want the candy to satisfy their sweet tooth. Others also say candy feels more personal and more enjoyable because it can be shared, saved, or eaten right away. It’s a gift that is simple, but means millions if you get the right candy.
Candy is closely tied to emotions and love. The small gesture can show appreciation without needing big words or expensive gifts.
“Getting candy is a nice gesture that shows that someone has care for you,” Jeshua Salazar – Zarate (‘27).
In the end, candy remains a Valentine’s day favorite and classic because it combines sweetness, simplicity, and emotion. As Jeshua put it best, “I’d rather receive candy on Valentine’s Day so I can enjoy eating it”.
