Kenneth Walker III, also known as K9 — was named the Superbowl LX MVP over Jason Myers, the kicker who scored 17 points for the Seattle Seahawks. All throughout, the Seattle Seahawks dominated over the New England Patriots in a defensive-minded football game.
Former superbowl-winning player and current head coach, Mike Vrabel of the New England Patriots struggled to perform on the offensive side with Drake Maye, their quarterback, often struggling to run out of the pocket and kept getting caught by the Seahawks blitz defense. By the end, Maye accumulated six total sacks from the Seahawks ‘The Dark Side’ defense, one that closely resembles the Seahawks greatest defense of all time, the Legion of Boom.
On the other hand, the Seahawks offense had a hard time completing passes due to Patriots cornerback, Christian Gonzalez who consistently locked up Seahawks wide receivers: Cooper Kupp and the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year, Jaxon Smith-Njigba. The inconsistency of passing plays was reflected in Smith-Njigba’s stats after the game, according to ESPN, he reeled in four receptions with ten targets for 27 yards. Gonzalez was always ready to defend each pass, ultimately forcing the Seahawks to incur six incomplete receptions.
By the end of the game, with successful performance in kicking five field goals and two one-point conversions, Myers dominated on special teams. He ended up scoring 17 points for the Seattle Seahawks out of the 29 points they scored. This is equivalent to two touchdowns and one field goal.
K9 didn’t score any points, but was an essential piece to Myers’ kicking success during Superbowl LX. He was the reason getting into field goal range was inevitable almost each and every time, statistics from ESPN said he had 27 carries for over 135 rushing-yards. Diego Hernandez (‘26) further emphasized K9’s impact on the game and said, “Without Kenneth Walker, they wouldn’t have kicked those [field] goals.” Myers has a history of being a reliable kicker, but this season specifically highlights him as an x-factor when he came in clutch for the Seahawks in the most critical moments. Rewinding back to the Seahawks vs. Indianapolis Colts game in week 15 of the regular season, Myers managed to score all 18 points; no other Seahawks player scored a point in that game, except for Myers. They won that game 18-16.
Two Seahawks fans were asked if Jason Myers should have gotten the MVP award instead. Gabe Thuo (‘29) said, “I feel like the kicker should have got MVP.” Jarrett Raymond (‘29) also said that “Myers should have gotten it.” According to Sports Illustrated, it is an established fact that no kicker in the history of the NFL has ever won an MVP award in the Superbowl.
Will we ever see a kicker get an MVP award for the Superbowl?
