Saying goodbye to this year’s seniors also means saying goodbye to seven members of Flight and one in Aerie. Flight is losing five girl spots, one boy spot, and a guitar player. Flight is a select choir that meets every morning at 7:00am, and Aerie is an all female choir in Swanson’s 4th period. If you go to Mr. Swanson’s room on May 24th and 25th, you could potentially fill one of those spots. Seasoned members of Flight Andrea Ramirez (‘17) and Hannah Jensen (‘17) have a few tips for people auditioning for select choir.

  1. Try not to sing songs like “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid, “Popular” or “Defying Gravity” from Wicked because Swanson has already heard them a million times.
  2. Ramirez says before you go in, “take a deep breath and don’t freak out, Swanson is chill, and your attitude is everything.”
  3. After going into the room, “You have to slate.” says Jensen. “You say your name and what song your singing. You also might want to know how to sight read, or at least be familiar with reading music.”
  4. “Don’t be afraid to try again!” Ramirez says speaking with experience. Ramirez didn’t get in her freshman year, but she worked hard and did the musical that spring and got in the following year.

Both Ramirez and Jensen agree that just because you didn’t get in, you shouldn’t give up. Jensen says that “you should continue to practice throughout the year, and try out for other choirs.” If you are hoping to get into Flight, you have to be prepared for “a lot of hard work, commitment, time, and energy.” says Jensen. When asked to describe Flight, Ramirez said that it’s “basically a crazy family that you have to wake up and see every morning at 7 am.” so if that sounds like something you would enjoy, make sure to audition on May 24th or 25th!
