Hannah Michaels ’17 poses with a new ice cream treat featured in the AHS DECA store. Ice cream is now available ranging from $1-$2.

In the fall of 2014, national legislation mandated new health laws in the public education system. Gone were the days of warm curly fries, Lays chips, and Blazing Bagels. Big Freezes and other coffees over 16 ounces were stripped from the shelves. Students moped about the halls of Arlington High School as their delicious foods and caffeinated beverages were suddenly taken away from them.

Alas, in late January, DECA began to weasel their way around the strict calorie count. DECA clerks began to sell a variety of different ice creams. From the beloved cartoon character Spongebob Squarepants to frozen chocolate treats, the new frozen desserts are a hit. During the first week of sales, the Spongebob popsicle sold out and the Push-Pops went fast also. “I’m so pumped. The strawberry shortcake ice cream is my favorite,” said Abby Krueger ‘15.

Also making a comeback are the beloved Big Freezes. “We’re using low-fat syrups in order to accommodate for the new regulations,” said Sarah Van Eyk ‘15. The Big Freezes are now being sold with lower calories so they pass the health codes. Students and DECA members alike are excited about the comeback of one of their favorite caffeinated drinks.

The new ice cream sheds light on how delicious low calories can be if DECA continues to find relatively healthy treats.
