Girl’s Basketball v. Edmonds-Woodway 1/7/14
Last night our Lady Eagles lost against the Edmonds-Woodway Warriors in overtime: the quintessential heart-breaker. Though it was a hard-fought battle through the whole regulation and overtime, our somewhat consistent lead during the latter half of the game lead to hopes of a close win for us against another top 3A team.
At halftime the score stood Arlington 42, Edmonds-Woodway 32. In response to a shaky start, the girls stepped up on defense with a few steals recorded by Jessica Ludwig ‘15 and Serefina Balderas ‘16 early. Just before the break of the half, a technical was called on and Edmonds-Woodway player and Jayla Russ ‘16 made all four free throws.
All night our perimeter shooting was on fire. Our eagles combined for a total 14 3-pointers, 6 of which were made by Sevi Bielser ‘16. The Warriors began to mount a comeback in the 4th, but our Eagles staved off being overtaken. Big plays, such as Ludwig’s And-1 as well as a beautiful cross-court assist by Gracie Castaneda ‘16 on a fast-break. Although finally succumbing to Edmonds-Woodway’s solid play, we were able to re-tie the game after Russ drew a foul and made both from the line to tie it up 69-69. Thus it was off to overtime.
Just like the whole game up this point, overtime was tense and nail-bitingly close. With under a minute Emma Janosek ‘16 sunk a 3 to tie again and the bench erupted. A timeout was called by Arlington at 33.4 seconds left in overtime and it was 79-79. In the flurry of play following the timeout, an unfortunate foul was called on Bielser, and the Edmonds player made both from the line to take the lead. 2.4 seconds left, Russ inbounded the ball and drove to take a floater, but to no avail.
It was a game in which no team deserved to lose, but alas, such is the nature of sports. Here’s hoping that our ladies can continue to perform well and maintain their stellar record.
