Arlington Wrestling Dominates State Tournament; Wins 3A State Championship

The Arlington Eagles sent 10 wrestlers to the 3A state tournament in Tacoma on February 18th and 19th with the hopes of being crowned state champions, both as a team and as individual wrestlers.

The Eagle’s found success early on with Will Rush, Azariah Crew, Ruben Crew, Robin Hernandez, Jeremy Nygard, Boston Jones, Cooper Mcauslan, Colton Ferro and Adalberto Ramos all winning their first matches of the day. After the first session, the Eagles, with 33 points, led second place Mt. Spokane by 8.

Heading into the second session, the Eagles remained dominant, with Jeremy Nygard breezing into the semifinals past Emilio Ramos of Kennewick in a 15-3 victory, along with Jones, Rork, Mcauslan, Ferro and both Crew brothers also clinching semifinal matches with impressive wins of their own.

Heading into the second and final day of competition, Arlington led district rival Edmonds-Woodway by twenty points, and looked strong as seven out of ten wrestlers prepared for the semifinals. In the 132 weight class, Rork took his match in a 6-4 victory to earn a spot in the 3A championship match, which he went on to lose, earning a second place finish. Robin Hernandez took 3rd place for the Eagles in the 105lb weight class on the girls side of the tournament. After a 7-1 victory in the semifinals, Jeremy Nygard advanced to the championship match to face his crosstown rival, Mason Phillips, the top wrestler from Stanwood High School in the 138lb weight class, who he fell to, resulting in a second place finish for the senior wrestler. Boston Jones took third place in the tournament after a win in the consolation bracket to close out his season. Cooper Mcauslan and Colton Ferro both placed 5th, with Mcauslan earning the honors in the 145lb weight class and Ferro in the 190lb class. Azariah Crew placed second in the 160lb weight class after a hard fought match in the championship and Ruben Crew became just the second wrestler in Arlington history to win a state championship, as he was victorious in the 170lb 3A championship.

Arlington took the 3A State title and the team was named state champions with a score of 148, topping 2nd place Mt. Spokane by 22 points, and wrapping up an impressive tournament for the Eagles. After the victory, Head Coach Rick Iversen announced his retirement, ending his coaching career with a very special Arlington wrestling team.
