Eagles Clinch Share of Wesco North Title in Rivalry Matchup

Last Friday’s game pitted the Arlington Eagles against the Marysville-Pilchuck Tomahawks in a rivalry game, which guaranteed the winner a share of the Wesco North Title. Heading into the game, there was no clear favorite to win, with Arlington having impressive wins over both Snohomish and Oak Harbor, and Marysville coming off of a big win against Everett, another Wesco North contender.

On Marysville’s first drive, the game seemed as if both teams were in for a battle.  Marysville’s QB Eric Lind scored on a QB sneak to put the Tomahawks up 7-0. Arlington’s Drew Kalahar could be heard on the sideline trying to get his teammates fired up. “Sideline! Get Loud!” screamed Kalahar as he eagerly waited to get in on offense. Arlington went on to score 44 more points in the game, with the Eagle’s defense shutting down the Tomahawk’s attempt at a comeback. Wyatt Bass shined on special teams, scoring Arlington’s first touchdown of the game off of an 85 yard punt return, sending the Arlington crowd, dressed in pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month, into pandemonium. The second quarter was capped off by Arlington’s 27-0 run, with 3 of those scores going to Senior-wideout, Donavan Sellgren. Sellgren, one of Kalahar’s favorite targets, finished with 6 receptions for 108 yards, and 3 touchdowns.

The Eagle’s also took advantage of their run game, primarily using Devon Nutter (‘17) as their weapon coming out of the backfield. Nutter ran for 198 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries, giving the hard running Junior  another impressive performance. From the sideline, Nutter looks as if he welcomes contact, and runs even harder when someone starts to tackle him, moving his entire body violently in order to shake off defenders. If you have watched the Seattle Seahawks games lately, his ferocious running style can be compared to that of Marshawn Lynch’s replacement, Thomas Rawls. When asked how it felt to be coaching the hardest running RB in the league, running back coach Jamie Wilson replied with a smile on his face and a simple, “it feels pretty good.”

As the season comes to a close, and the postseason begins, a healthy Devon Nutter could lead to a deep playoff run for the Eagles and their double threat offense. With the pairing of Drew Kalahar, who finished the game with 198 passing yards and 4 touchdowns,  throwing to Kyle Bayer and Donavan Sellgren, and the dominant Eagles backfield consisting of the hard running Nutter and the evasive Kyler Smith, the Eagle’s domination of Wesco North comes as no surprise.
