Goals for AHS Wrestling
Arlington wrestling is facing a comeback after having dropped out of the top 10 at the state tournament last season. They have their sights set on returning to the state tournament and dominating.
As a team, the wrestlers have been working towards building a trusting culture. Much like a family, they hold each other accountable for their actions and keeping good grades. Together they will grow into better people.
“We want to create a a certain culture where the young guys coming in can really develop and learn the values of working hard” said Coach Jonny Gilbertson.
Daniel Heiss (’17),the varsity 106 lb wrestler last season, has dedicated much of his summer to improving his technique and timing. He sees himself a leader on the team and therefore believes he’s responsible for helping the young guys learn and mature through the sport of wrestling.
The wrestling team lost many seniors last year, including Tristan “Tex” Emery, who had placed 2nd last year in the state tournament. Despite this fact, Gilbertson believes they have many young guys who “are being slept on” and who have been putting in the work over the summer. These young kids, claims Gilbertson, are going to shock a lot of people this year.
Gavin Rork (’18), a leader on the team, has some goals of his own for the wrestling team this season. He claims that “there will be 7 state placers this year” that’s not even counting the alternates and the people who participate but don’t place. Rork is also looking toward claiming that state championship title after having taken 4th place last year.
When talking to the wrestlers, the recurring theme was the commitment they have not only to the sport but to each other, these are the ideals they hold very dear for they are a family in every real sense. Not only will they be working hard for themselves and their coaches, they will be working hard for each other, becoming better as one. Succeeding as one. Dominating as one.
