Are Conferences Still Necessary?
With school-wide conferences right around the corner, questions concerning the necessity of teacher-parent conferences have arisen.
Many students feel that conferences are unnecessary because grades are available online. Sophomore Nick Corgiat said that his parents sometimes attend conferences, but only if they feel that it is fundamental and that there is a legitimate reason for them to meet with their son’s teacher(s).
“They can just check my grades online,” said Corgiat.
Unlike in elementary school, where there are scheduled times for parents to go in and meet with teachers, high school conferences are completely optional.
Svea Dean (’16) said that her mom enjoys going to conferences because, “She likes to hear how well I’m doing – if I’m doing well.”
Ultimately, the decision to go to conferences is up to a student’s parents. Parents may choose not to attend conferences because they have the ability to check grades on Skyward, have busy schedules, already contact teachers via e-mail or phone, or simply because they don’t want to go.
Mr. Roys, teacher and athletic director at Arlington High School, believe
s that conferences are of value.
“I like conferences,” said Roys. “It’s a great way to promote communication between teachers and parents. I love it.”
There will be a half day on Tuesday, November 10th and conferences will occur after school on that day.
