Upcoming NHS Officer Elections
As summer gets closer, clubs and sports at Arlington High School are ending their seasons and preparing for the coming year. Being one of the various clubs at this school, National Honor Society is preparing for the new year with the induction of the new members on June 1st. With new members comes an opportunity for NHS students to run for a leadership position in the club. As the advisor of NHS, Mrs. Herman is looking for current sophomores and juniors who are in the club to run for a position.
NHS has six officer positions, all of which are currently occupied by seniors. Therefore, every position will need to be filled since there won’t be any officers returning. The positions are President, Vice President, Secretary, Parliamentarian, Historian, and Treasurer.
“I’m the parliamentarian,” said Curtis Willett ‘15. Willett executes the rules and makes sure the club meetings are run smoothly. “It looks good on college apps and it’s a fun role to be in. I’ve really enjoyed my time being apart of it.”
Bethany Tavenner ‘15 was the Vice President of the the NHS club during the 2013-2014 school year and currently reigns as the President. As President, she coordinates officer meetings once a month, runs club meetings, and makes sure all members are aware of upcoming events. “It’s cool because I’m in cahoots with Herman who’s cool.”
Tavenner also gets a lot of help from the vice president, Connor Ghirardo ‘15. His sole job is to help her with any ideas and take over at officer meetings if she is unable to attend. The other positions are treasurer, secretary, and historian who all have smaller roles.
Treasurer, Felix Neeleman ‘15, handles all the money, and records how much NHS has to spend. All NHS members pay an annual $10 fine that go towards club t-shirts and sweatshirts.
As secretary, Demri Toop ‘15, takes notes and records important dates and projects that need to be noted for upcoming meetings.
Hannah Scarth ‘15, the historian, is the person who documents any group projects that are done and makes sure they get filed to Mrs. Herman.
The elections are on June 3rd. In order to become an NHS officer, you must email Mrs. Herman a statement saying why you want run for that position. Then, at the 7:40 am and 2:40 pm meetings, you tell the other club members why you are the most eligible candidate for that position. The statement doesn’t need to be long, in fact Herman prefers if it is one-to-two minutes.
Again, NHS elections are open to all current sophomores and juniors who have been inducted into the club.
