Football season at Arlington High School is in full swing. Friday night lights shine brightest over the players, but off the field is a group of managers. Keeping everything running smoothly and working quietly and unnoticed until now.
The role of football managers is crucial. From keeping players hydrated to preparing equipment and uniforms. They are the backbone of the team’s preparation and success.
For many managers, they aren’t looking for recognition and it’s more about being part of something so special. It makes it worth it.
“Being on the team and helping them.” Lukela Lane (‘29) says it is the most rewarding part of being a manager. The managers may not score the touchdowns, but they still contribute to the win.
Lukela Lane (‘29) says “cleaning jerseys and cleaning up after them,” are some of the responsibilities of managers, they are wide-ranging and sometimes even gross. At practice or at games you can find managers carrying water, washing jerseys, recording game film, and even staying late to tidy up.
“Man, they do so much and it’s such a thankless job.” Greg Dailer, Head Football Coach said. The managers take care of the small little things that build up so that the coaches can focus on the game. The football coaches at Arlington High School say without the managers, practices would be longer and game days more chaotic.
“We’d definitely be missing a key part of practice if they [managers] weren’t there.” Colton Hermans (‘26) a senior football player said. Players also appreciate the behind-the-scenes help. Some players said they are very grateful they don’t wash their own jerseys. The players get dirty on the field, but the managers get dirty on the sidelines too.
While the work is long and tiring, the managers say the experience pays off in the long run. Sports management teaches you communication, respect and leadership. They may not hear their names over the loudspeaker, but their dedication does not go unnoticed any longer.
Managers prove that not all heroes wear helmets, some carry water bottles and laundry bags.
