Tennis with a slow start to conference play, volleyball cutting it close with a team they haven’t played in two years, and football winning its first game? All that and more here on your sports recap from this week (Sept 15-19).
First off boys tennis, and they could have had a better week. Playing highly ranked Jackson, and a tough Kamiak team, they took two shutout losses in those match ups.
“It was difficult there” said Max Caldwell (‘27) varsity tennis player, “We need a win, we need to win 100%”.
They then took on Everett and lost by a close margin, 3-4, and then took the loss to Glacier Peak with yet another sweep. A rough start here for the Eagles tennis team, as they head to Mariner on Sept 22, face off against Lake Stevens on Sept 24, and then head to Cascade on Sept 25.
Girls soccer had two match-ups this week, and some pretty hard fought matches but ultimately, didn’t come out great for the Eagles.
At Meadowdale the girls lost 1-2, then at home they lost to Jackson in their second conference game, 0-1. The girls now move to 4th in the Wesco 4A division, with a 1-1 record in the conference. They also have the second highest goals scored average in their conference, which could be something to keep an eye on as the season progresses.
Two conference games are coming up next week, on Sept 23 against Kamiak high school, and on Sept 25 against Lake Stevens. The JV squad tied Meadowdale 0-0 and lost to Jackson 1-2. The Eagles hope to push further in the standings, and closer to that top three spot.
Volleyball also had a pretty even week, as they went 1-1 record wise as well. On Sept 16, the Eagles faced off against Snohomish, and started off the first set hot.
With Audrey Marsh (‘26) serving an ace, Emme Shaffer (‘26) having three key spikes including helping score 6 straight to help try and spark a comeback, and Emily Terry (‘26) paired with other teammates shoving the ball back to the Panthers side defensively. But unfortunately it wasn’t enough for them to make a run at putting a win on the first set.
“I feel like we just lost our momentum” said Audrey Marsh (‘26), “We just have to pick our momentum back up, we were kind of in our heads” Marsh claimed.
It kept going downhill for the girls as they lost the match 1-3. They went on to then beat Cascade 3-0 putting them at an overall record of 2-2 and in a 3-way tie for first in the conference.
They will head to Shorecrest on Sept 23 and head to Lake Stevens on Sept 25, needing a win there in their conference game.
On Sept 17, the Cross Country team went down to McCollum Park for a match-up with three other teams (Everett, Edmonds-Woodway, and Lynwood).
In the boys 2-mile race, the Eagles dominated with a score of 23, having 6 of our runners in the top 10. Joshua Nguyen (‘27) took 4th place, Brenden Roehl (‘28) took 3rd place, and with a 15 second gap between him and the runner up, Chase Koenigs (‘28) took 1st place.
In the girls 2-mile, it was once again dominant for the Eagles as they had a team score of 23, with Raelyn Oetzel (‘26) taking 2nd place and Anabelle Klein (‘27) taking 1st place, the dynamic duo of the night.
Then, on Sept 20, the Eagles went to South Whidbey for another big meet against 11 other teams in their division. In the girls 5,000 meter, Klein took 1st place once again by a 6 second gap, getting a team score of 80 placing second. In the boys 5,000 meter, Koenigs took 6th place helping the team earn their score of 113 placing fourth in those standings.
Next week on Sept 24, the Eagles will have some home field advantage heading to Weston High school, and will hope to keep this hot streak they are on and keep placing in the top five
The Gridiron was full of excitement on Sept 19, as the Eagles finally won their first game of the year, and with it being against Jackson High School, it was the first conference game as well.
The Eagles came out hot, scoring twice from Linkin Currie (‘27), a sliding touchdown catch on the ground from Dylan Durfee (‘26) and a pair of rushing touchdowns from Dirci Ngondo (‘26) and Kaleb Bartlett-Wood (‘26). Some key plays defensively too, like an interception by Hassanian Miran (‘26) and a clutch TFL (tackle for loss) from Miles Ecker (‘26).
At half, the Eagles led 32-7. After another touchdown from Bartlett-Wood and a field goal from Mason Mendoza (‘26) in the second half, Arlington led 42-7. In last ditch efforts to run the clock out, they couldn’t help but score again from Waylon Kinser (‘28) to Jaelin Hughes (‘28) stamping the final score as 48-7.
They head to Goddard Stadium next week to face off against Kamiak high school in their second conference match-up on Sept 26. The JV team beat Bothell 24-20, and will play on Sept 22 to hopefully keep the undefeated streak.
Well, that’s it for this week, thanks for tuning in and showing up for your Arlington Eagles! Keep grinding athletes and as always, Go Fight Win!!!
