Being a good student can be defined by lots of things, what your teachers think of you, what you’re involved in, grades or even what you go on to do after high school.
All of these things come from the same action of showing up and doing your work. If you have this one quality and put effort into all of your work you have the chance of being a student that excels.
“I think just showing up every day and putting in your best effort, making sure you’re doing all your assignments on time,” Leyton Martin your (25), valedictorian and three sport athlete and a 12 time letterman.
Even though you’re involved in other things through the school or outside of the school building, finding the time to complete what you have to for school can lead to success throughout your years.
“Well, if I had practice right after school, then I would just go to practice, go home, do my homework, but I would always try and do my own work before practice if I could at school and just try and get everything done,” Hudson Younger (25), valedictorian and two sport athlete said.
Finding time can be a huge part in your success in school, but also how you make use of that time can determine your success in everything you do.
“I’ve tried taking notes in a variety of different ways. Sometimes it’s just a bullet point. I like to try to take my notes differently for different subjects, so sometimes it’s more text, sometimes it’s just like diagrams and things. As for studying. I really like this thing called the pomodoro method where you work for 25 minutes and then you take a five minute break and you keep doing that for two hours. That helps me to break up what I’m doing, so I don’t get overwhelmed,” Izzy Kovarik (25).
Study is hard work and sometimes can lead to burnout with all that goes on through the months September – June. Dealing with this burn out head on can help you feel better and willing to work faster than just ignoring it.
“I shut down a lot when I get burnt out. a lot of the time, I’ll put my work aside for a bit, and I’ll go on a walk or I’ll just give myself a day,” Kovarik said.
Seeing all of your hard work pay off after putting in time and effort can become one of the best moments in your life.
“It’s given me a lot of different scholarship opportunities, which has been nice, and it helped. I got a full ride, but they were able to pay a lot of the tuition. not have to pay as much for my tuition because I was able to get scholarships,” Martin said.
Knowing your plan and what you can do to achieve it is something a strong willed student does, and knowing if you give up or skip a week that it can mess up all of your plans.
“I just know I’ll regret it if I don’t do it. And so that normally helps me push through not doing it, but, I also just like to look into the future and know, like, if I didn’t do something, I would be mad that I didn’t do it. I’d be mad at myself,” Younger said.
