From September to June, students spend most of their time in school. Typically following a five-day week with two-day weekend. While holidays like Spring break and winter break provide relief, the question still remains, are students getting enough rest throughout the year to stay focused and successful.
“I think a three day weekend would give students a break, and give them time to just prepare for the next week.” said Reagon Nortan, a freshman at Arlington High School.”
However, not all students are in favor of this idea. Some worry that more breaks during the year could lead to a shorter summer vacation, that is something students are unwilling to give up.
“Would you want three day weekends? No. Probably not, if that meant summer was longer, I feel like that would make summer quite a bit shorter, and I value my vacation time in the summer,” said Hannah Skarwecki, a Junior at Arlington High School.
Many students teresure their summer break, it’s the longest break they get every year. Still, opinions shift when asked if they would support more breaks without sacrificing their summer.
“Winter is the most daunting part of the year because there’s no sun. It’s like the middle of the year. Like, you still have a bunch of months of school left. You have, like, four months left, and it’s cold and it’s rainy, and there’s nothing to do.” said Skarwecki
The most important thing for students is their mental health. School can be a very stressful place for many students, the weekends and breaks allow students to escape from that stress for a little while.
“ I think that two day weekends can affect students’ mental health because it’s just a lot of work in one period of time, and I think they should get a longer break.” Said Nortan
What students want is balance, with enough time to rest after demanding weeks, without giving other important breaks.
“I think that the time in between breaks could be too long. Or, like, maybe just, like, one day off every other month. Like, a three day weekend would just be great.” said Skarwecki.
