Since 3rd grade, Washington State students have had to complete the SBACs each year. SBAC stands for Smarter-Balanced Assessment Consortium. In the spring the students take ELA and Math test. In 8th grade, students are expected to complete the science state testing. Students complain year after year because of these tests.
Getting prepared for these tests is crucial, “I prepare my students for them by presenting and guiding them through various exercises related to unit topics and texts/media, using a variety of techniques and strategies, to develop greater knowledge and skill in demonstrating their attainment of those ELA standards.” Jeff Vogel said.
State testing can be really stressful for these students. They are given a heads up for when testing is going to be taking place, a little time to prepare. These days are very exhausting due to the prolonged time sitting down and staring at a computer screen. These tests are not the easiest, it takes time and perseverance to focus on each and ever question.
Freshman get a break inbetween years of testing, sophomore year students have to take math and ela, “When I woke up that morning, I really just wanted to go back to sleep. Waking up for the SBAC is really difficult. When its all over it is the most relieving feeling.” Lila Matter said. From 8:00-10:00 am, for 4 different days, students are expected to take these exams.
Although students really do not want to take the SBAC, “They should be viewed as an interesting challenge and taken on with glee. You should already be able to perform all of the tasks that the test requires of you if you have paid attention, engaged in your classwork and completed assignments and assessments in the classroom setting up to at least a B. Look on it as a chance to strut your stuff and show what you know and can do.” Vogel said.
“I really wish that SBAC testing wasn’t required but I guess I do see the reason. I think that it definitely annoying to get up and have to test but maybe it will help me for my graduation pathway” Bayley Sights said.
During the spring time, every student knows that the SBACs are on their way. Even if it isnt the most exciting thing to do, they are a good viewpoint on where you are at in what youve learned throughout the year.
