On Saturday February 1, ASB’s sophomore class hosted “A Starry Night,” the annual winter semi-formal dance, known as Tolo. The dance was held in the AHS commons, with tickets ranging from $10 (with ASB), $12 (without ASB), or $18 (at the door). Students enjoyed a mid-winter pick-me-up, hanging out with friends, and dancing the night away.
Despite an unexpected snow storm, staff commented on the high attendance, as students were excited to spend the evening supporting the sophomore class fundrasiser.
“It’s been pretty good actually, the music has been good and everybody’s been dancing, like the energy has been up,” said Brooklyn Barnes (9).
“I think it’s really nice because you can dance to it and it’s just the song that you hear on the radio or on your Spotify and it’s really hype,” said Peyton Parsons (9).
While some thought highly of the music, others were unsure of the choices.
“There’s not enough people to like dance, and the vibes are kind of off, you know, like not enough party vibes,” said Ellie Blakely (10).
“Some of the songs are a little bit inappropriate,” Parsons said.
Music proved to be a controversial topic among the students, some comparing the event to previous dances hosted by the school, however, the DJ, Mr. Belew, was well-received and had an established fan base, as a well-liked english teacher.
“It’s definitely more laid back, pretty chill, because there’s not a lot of people here,” Barnes said.
Despite the mixed opinions, most students enjoyed the night, thanks to the sophomore class for transforming the commons into a true starry night experience, with balloons, twinkling lights and even a photo backdrop.
“It’s been really good. The music is really hype and it’s really fun to dance to and all my friends are really fun to hang out with and it’s just really great,” Parsons said.
