To Tan or Not To Tan . . .
Winter is quickly coming to an end and now is the time when high students flocking to artificial tanning salons to get reedy for summer. We all have been told how tanning beds are bad and how we should not use them. Never the less the tanning salon business made over 5billion in review last year (IBIS World). Turns out of the number of young people who tan, 32 percent are girls in 12th grade (healthresearchfunding.org). So your not alone senior high school girls.
Now is the time we see our friend’s and fellow students coming to school looking like lobsters and complaining about burning them selves. There are both pros and cons about tanning. Lydia Schoenbachler says, “tanning is relaxing and a great way to change up my look”. Many are just like her but most don’t know the danger. Tanning is no way is part of a healthy life style. Tans are caused by UV radiation and if you get tan at all you have sustained skin cell damage.
No mater what you here from that gorgeous perfectly brown girl behind the counter selling you a membership, UV radiation can lead to premature skin aging as well as skin cancer especially melanoma. Nate tans constant when I asked him how he felt about his risk of cancer going up he tells me “I’m tan and I’m happy so I’m not worried”. What Nate doesn’t realize is the huge risk he is putting his skin under. Carly Robbins is you casual tanner only during summer and never in a tanning bed. Six months ago Carly was looking at her arm “ I found a mole I was worried because I never have seen any thing like it”. After going to the doctor she found out It was the begging stages of skin cancer. Luckily for her she caught it in the beginning stages and is treatable. Many are not as lucky as Carly and catch melanoma and skin cancers to late. Clearly, there is no room for tanning a healthy lifestyle.
